Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Skull
Heavy, convex, longitudinal and transversal, because of the muscular relief of the masticators and nape.

Nose
The same length of the skull, the stop is situated in the half of the distance from the occipital to the tip of the nose.l We separate skull and nose, but it is the set of both that define the typicalness of the Dogo´s head, belonging to the mesocephalic type, delineating a concave/convex profile: the convex skull because of the relief of the insertion of masticatory muscles, classical for the skull of a masticatory-type hunting dog and the nose, slightly concave and turned-up, proper for the dog with excellent olfaction, what, in short means, that the Dogo Argentino has skull of masticatory and nose of smeller; a functional integration, congregating high sense of smell and special masticator. Zygomatic arches wide apart from skull, forming a wide temporal fossa, for commode insertion of the temporal muscle, one of the main masticators.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Eyes
They may be dark or hazel. Eyelids with black or clear rims, inserted wide separate, of smart and intelligent look, but, at the same time, hardly expressive. The clear eyes or red eyelids reduce the punctuation. The inequality of colors is a desqualifying lack.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Jawbones
Well articulated, without prognathism, strong, with good dental implantation. It doesn´t matter the number of molar teeht. The most important is the homogeneity of dental arches, absence of caries of upper or lower prognathism, and especially, the four canine teeth, which are big, clean and perfectly articulated crossing themselves, in the bite, when holding the prey.

Muzzle
Strongly pigmented in black, wide nostrils, with a slight stop at the tip. The white or strongly white-spotted muzzle deducts points. Cleft muzzle or leporine lips is disqualifying lack.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Ears
With high insertion, erect or semi-erect, triangular shaped and they always have to be cropped. The judge should not have to judge a Dogo Argentino with ears not cropped, removing it from the track. With the female, a longer cut is acceptable, as in the German Dog. With the male is preferable a little shorter cut. The Dogo Argentino is a hunting dog: during the fight the long ears allow an easy and very painful prey. Moroeover, aesthetic reasons become necessary to crop the ears.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Lips
Well-adjusted, dry, with free borders, black pigmented. The short lip is required, so that when the dog is holding the prey, it can breathe, also, because of labial comisure. If the lips are suspended although the jaw bone is long enough, they would perform valve role, hindering the supplemental inspiration by the labial comisures, closing the comisure and compelling it to let the prey go, due to asphyxia, as it happens to the breeds of suspended lips.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Occiput
Completely occult by the powerful muscles of the nape, it cannot be marked, being marked, being the insertion of head and neck in arch-shaped. (It is confused with the curve of the upper line of the skull).

Neck
Thick, arched, slim, neck with very thick throat skin, making wrinkles as in the Mastiff, Dogue de Bourdeaux, Bulldog and not so taut as in the Bull Terrier. The elasticity of the neck´s skin is due to the flaccid tissue in this region, making possible the landslide of the skin on the superficial aponeurosis, in such way that the canine teeth or the enemy claws can´t reach the muscles, only, the leather. For example: if a Cougar tries to hold it by the neck, the elastic skin would be strained, allowing it to hold the prey, as well.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Chest
Wide, deep, giving the sensation of having great lungs. Seen from the front the sternum has to surpass below the elbows. Since the Dogo Argentino is a dog of work and fight , it is obvious to detach the necessity of a deep and ample chest, by the importance of the breath.

Withers
High, very strong, with great muscular relieves.

Thorax
Wide, from the sideview, the lower line reaches the level of the elbows.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Column
Higher in withers, with a slight slope towards the haunch. In adults, when the muscular development of the back and kidneys is good, from the sideview, notices the relief of the spinal muscles, forming a medium canal to the side of the column.

Upper Limbs
Rights and well planted. The legs have short and well joined toes. The length of the fingers is proportional to the leg. They have high plantar cushions, fleshy with a very rough sole to the touch, with corns that allow it to run a lot, in rough and stony land, not hurting itself.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Loin
Occult by the muscles of the back.

Lower Limbs
Of muscular thighs, with a short heel and wide closed fingers, without aberrant fingers. With good angle, remembering always that they are responsible for the propulsion, speed and sustentation in the body fight, therefore, it will never be too much to insist on how important the strength is on the musculature of the thigh. The wolf´s fingers (aberrant fingers) so easy to be suppressed in the first months, deduct points, as ins the recessive characteristics of the Dogo of Pyrenees, however it does not cause disqualification.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Tail
Long, straightened in arch, with a wide curve upwards. During combat they keep it lifted and in constant lateral motion, as when the animal receives its mater. It must be in mind, that the tail constitutes a great aid, as much in the direction change during the breed, acting as helm, in compensatory action, as in the fight, serving of sustentation or abutment, collaborating in the work of the lower limbs.

Weight
From 88-100 pounds (40 to 45kg).

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Height
From 23 to 26 inches (60-65 centimeters). As much in the height as in the weight, the judge must be inflexible, so being the Dogo Argentino a fight dog, among the greatest hunting breeds, the size reduction takes its efficiency off. Among some good examples, the tallest is preferable. The breeders taught that the Dogo Argentino is a normotype and inside of this a macrotalic, which means that, there must be a harmony in the ratio, that under a functional point of view, is eurhytmia, that is, normal organic correlation, translated as a greater capacity of strength, therefore must be searched for the biggest in height and weight, without reaching gigantism, for sure.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Color
Completely white. All and any stain of color must disqualify the unit for being an atavic characteristic. The white ones strongly black-pigmented skin must be considered as exemplary inapt for the breeding, due to the recessive character that demonstrate and that it may be dominant in the puppies, if they are coupled with units, that, potentially, have this defect. The small stains in the head are not disqualification reason, but among two exemplary equivalents, the decide will be for the unit that best matches with the completely white one. On the other hand, any stain in the trunk is reason for disqualification.

Breed Standard Dogo Argentino

Lacks
Any deviation in terms of this standard will have to be considered as lack and penalized in the same proportion.

Disqualifications
Eyes off different colors - deafness - stains in the body - long hair - inferior or superior prognathism - white or strongly pigmented nose- pendulum lip - sharp head - not operated ears - height behind 60 centimeters (23 inches) - more than one stain in the head - All and any other physical disproportion.

NOTE
